Perched on the edge of the Apokalyps caldera, the capital of Cadarnle stretches its stone roots toward the Aridian Ocean. The bustling heart of Aruchel is a marvel of civilization where sea, land, and sky converge into one magnificent metropolis. As with all of Aruchel, Cadarnle is built upon the shards of an ancient cosmic relic that fell to Katharsis thousands of years before the Scouring, imbuing the land with strange, unearthly energies. The skies above teem with airships from the floating Sister Isles, while below, great ocean liners arrive from distant continents, bearing exotic cargo and bold adventurers. The city pulses with life, a dense hive of traders, scholars, and fortune-seekers. Glowing veins of aetherium weave through its streets, casting their faint blue glow on the stone foundations and twisted archways vaulting above the various Districts.
The Arcadian Market, considered the commercial hub of Cadarnle, sprawls along Constellation Bay. A breathtaking sight at night, the gulf’s phosphorescent stones and aquatic plants give off an ethereal glow, mirroring the stars above. The market boasts colorful awnings, clinking coins, and a constant mix of voices fill vibrant stalls and merchant shops where goods from both ocean and sky are exchanged. Meanwhile, in the Trade Hall, high-stakes deals are made and rare goods are auctioned between daring adventurers and seasoned merchants seeking their fortunes among the city’s most prominent brokers.
Elevated above the main market and port area, Skywharf is a vast skyport teeming with navigators, skyfarers, and traders. Perched on stone towers and wooden stilts designed to accommodate massive airships, the wharf serves as the gateway between Cadarnle and the clouds. The nearby Navigation Guildhall aids travelers in charting their courses to the floating islands and beyond. Hidden beneath Skywharf’s underbelly is the Gilded Grotto, a shady hotspot for clandestine deals, games of chance, and selling of secrets.
If one is so inclined toward prestige, the Inner Circle District represents the more affluent side of Apokalyps. Quieter and filled with institutions of ‘higher’ learning, the I.C.D. is the center for alchemists, scientists, and scholars studying the city’s strange cosmic materials. The Forge of Starlight, owned by the legendary blacksmith, Thallan Firecrest, produces tools, weapons, and artifacts crafted from the rare star-metals. Items forged here are renowned for their durability and mystical properties. Rising high above this district, the Scholars’ Spire is home to the Celestial Order of Aruchel. The Spire also serves as the residence of The Warden, whose steadfast, vigilant presence ensures Cadarnle’s laws are upheld amidst the academic and political jousting.
Set high upon a plateau overlooking both the city and the ocean, Highspire is a lively entertainment district, with taverns, gambling dens, and training paddocks where thrill-seekers gather for various sporting events. The Starborne Arena is Cadarnle’s sky-racing epicenter, hosting the annual, highly anticipated (and wagered upon) Star Flyer Cup. The course itself twists and weaves through the city, giving spectators in every district a glimpse of the exhilarating competition before ending back at the ‘Winner’s Circle.’ Between races, the facility serves as the homebase and training center for racers and their coaches. On a calmer note, the Ember Gardens pay homage to the volcanic heart of Apokalyps. This botanical oasis features exotic thermophilic plants that emit a faint glow at night, attracting botanists and visitors alike to stroll its serene pathways.
At the city’s outskirts, the Lower Reach is a sprawling district where Cadarnle’s impoverished citizens reside. Narrow, winding streets lead to makeshift shacks and humble abodes, built from weathered wood, discarded remnants, and salvaged scraps of aetherium. While resources here may be scarce, the sense of community thrives. Residents band together to overcome the rougher side of town. The Glowstone Inn is a notable location, where struggling artists perform and laborers gather to briefly forget their cares. If you’re looking for a good story or fanciful tale, The Glowstone is a must.
In short, Cadarnle is a place where magic meets industry, and secrets flow as freely as the sea breeze - a grounded heart in a world of floating wonders. Citizens live between worlds, precariously balancing earth, sea, and sky while their eyes gaze intently upon the boundless horizon. For all of its complexity, the crown jewel of Aruchel offers the thrill of adventure and the weight of mystery to anyone intrepid enough to explore it.
